Needed:gearbox
Hello,
I am looking for a gearbox, type 717.439.
It is for our W463.327 G300D from1993. Motor OM603
Anyone?
Best regards,
Erik.
I have a feeling that you will struggle to find one.
I think certain w124's have similar gearboxes. The 2.6 petrol?
Minor mod's required such as remote breather.
Try some Google searches.
What has gone on your gearbox? Beyond repair?

Follow that link to Klaus's site who had similar issues and used a 190 2.6 gearbox which is pretty much the same thing with a slightly higher 5th gear (6% so not a lot). It is all laid out there for you.
Hi folks - new to this or any forums - sorry to barge in on your topic but I have a 460 280GE 1985 G Wagen - and would like to try to improve the MPG by swopping the gearbox to a 5 speed one - I am told Mercedes W123, 126, and 107 or Getrag would do it.
It needs to be pretty straight forward as I'm not vbery experienced at swopping stuff around.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers John
Hi John,
Welcome to GWOA, there is a lot of historical help and threads on here. Just be aware that this one you found and replied to is 5 years old.
I think you are getting there with the options, and it's a matter of finding one of those options. There are a few members with this sort of spares access.

Hi JDRing - and thank you for your response I was beginning to wonder if there was anyone out there. I did realise aft5er a while that the thread was very old - but I hope I can attract someone with the knowhow to solve my problem with the MPG.
I have just lifted out the engine and gearbox to attend to the Crankshaft Oil Seals front and rear as well as replacing the clutch as it got contaminated by the oil leak.
I had a real problem finding a clutch that was available and at a price I could afford. Anyway I was advised by someone in N Ireland of one that would fit and having removed the gearbox today I and pleased find that it looks as if it will fit. Although quite different to the one that is fitted - the pressure place looks to have the bolts in the right places. So I will get it of and trial fit it tomorrow.
But while I am at it , I might as well try and get a 5 speed gearbox for it and hopefully improve the MPG to something I can live with.
Forever hopeful
Cheers John
I am admiring your 'have a go' approach. Always easier when you can get the engine out, and on a 460 thats pretty straight forward. Gearboxes are a mystery to me though and which go with which engines etc.
As for the MPG, you are never going to improve it that much with a G. If there was a way, we would all be doing it. You can tune, you can switch to LPG or Diesel and get a little better, but when you do the maths, the cost of doing that work pays for +10mpg for a long while.
It's more of a case of making it a better drive. The 5-speed gearbox is great in my opinion, so good luck finding one.
Yes, G's are all bad on fuel and unfortunately the 280 is the worst offender, keeping speed below 60 is probably the biggest saving
