My Diesel wont bloody start!
It started getting hard to start in the morning. The glow plug light comes on 30 secs after the key is turned and stays on for about 20 secs.
Now the thing wont start at all.
HELpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp
Looks like your glowplugs are dead. Get to any Bosch service and buy yourself a set. In theory, you could find out which one is faulty and buy just the one (or ones), but the rest would fail in the near future as well so better change the whole set.
I paid £ 10.50 for each of mine so they are not pricey.
Now that I look at your profile, there's a Bosch distributor in Guildford: SAS, Westfield Road, Slyfield Ind Est, Guildford, Surrey.
Cheers
Are there any Glow plug relays or fuses that can go?I wouldnt want to find it is just a fuse.I have checked the fuses under the passenger dash
Anything is possible regarding this latest occurrence, but the symptoms that you describe "The glow plug light comes on 30 secs after the key is turned and stays on for about 20 secs" are those listed in my manual as caused by faulty glowplugs.
The glowplug relay box is a rectangular black box, of some 12 x 4 cms of size, which you will find to the LH side of the engine bay. There is a way of testing the glowplugs from this box, but I don't know how.
I am not sure which engine or plugs you have ,but generally,to test plugs ,you want to test the electrical resistance of each one individually and look for any that differ substantially. On my engine there is a plug from the glowplugs that goes into the relay,if you unplug this then you can use a multimeter on resistance scale to test between each plug and the engine block. If my memory serves me well, each plug should give a reading of about one ohm.If faulty,it is likely you would get a very high reading ,possibly megohms, indicating an open circuit,or alternatively,(although less likely),a very low reading, zero ohms ,indicating a short circuit. If you have'nt got the plug on your relay you can disconnect thje individual wires from each plug at the plug itself. If this does'nt make a lot of sense any friend with a bit of electrical experience should be able to help

The way I have tested it was by removing the glow plugs. A visual inspection can almost immediately tell you if they do recieve current. As the ones working properly will burn clean and the defect ones most probably be black with diesel.
I then take a wire from + and - from battery and put current through glow plug. If it smokes and getting hot it should be fine.Disgard the ones that don't get hot and are black with diesel.Keep the ones thats working as spares and replace the lot.
