spotted this on a german site, says only four built, has extra body work to rear, has a 220 volt vorbereitet, whatever that is?,
I thought it might be some sort of campervan from the photo -- have e-mailed advertiser for more info-- if he has the english that is.
PS other half is quite fluent in German( and I can successfully order beer, danke sh???)
but German car terminology has us beat.
P.S. I should add I was really looking for a LWB G270CDI,
Marcus

220v vorbereitet = prepared, which can mean quite a few things....

220 Volt vorbereitet probably means that you can use you home kettle inside!

This is apparently a genuine Binz ambulance conversion!

Looks very nice as a campervan, but bear in mind that although it was made in 1992 this is a W461 G-Wagen (i.e. similar to a 460) and not a 463. However, if the mileage is genuine (which it probably is) it is a very smart truck.

binz amb conversion

Jesus,
Thank you much for your prompt reply,
but like the dog and the motorbike I might not know what to do with it (ie. the Binz ) if I do manage to catch it .
I am still awaiting response from vendor , may be sold already anyway.
What paperwork/costs involved in personal import ex Germany,
I would have some advantage as my German speaking sister is currently resident there.
P.S.
May have to consider selling 1984 SWB 300GD 135,000, one owner from new, absolutly genuine, no oil leaks, new rear axle( ie from MB ) just thro test, usual rust at rear door Reg No G I W 405 (may sell reg seperatly )

mb -- binz

Getting more forgetful than Dective Columbo( in the raincoat?)
Anyway meant to ask what engine is this -- 5cyl, 92? PS any potential for upgrading
run from N.Ireland to Europe may need a little more "go" to be a viable proposition.
Now what was my name again?

It is definitely the more modern OM602 as fitted to the W463 250GD. However, in early W461 configuration it delivers only 84 HP @ 4,600 rpm.

I believe that it was later upgraded (in 1990) as fitted in the W463 with 94 HP @ 4,600 rpm and 158 Nm @ 2,600-3,100 rpm.

If it is the latter, performance will be noticeably better than your 300GD.

This engine can be turboed as fitted to the W202 C250 TD and W124 E250 Turbo but I would leave it as it is.

I hate to query the knowledgeable people on this board, especially Jesus, but doesn't the C250 turbodiesel (W202) have a 605.960 engine? This model produces 150 bhp, and is easily chipped to 180.

I would presume the 602 is different internally to the 605 series engine, especially as its capable of c. 60% more bhp.

Regards,

Tim

Tim, you got me there!

Yes, you are right, the code is OM605 but I meant that the basic design (engine block, etc) is that of the OM602. An you are also right in that it has reinforced internals (I suspect that the pistons and conecting rods are different).... but that is why I suggested not to turbo the engine in the first place!

Jesus,
Re your comments on 461 series engine specs for above I am puzzled as having used your excellent article in issue 23 -- June 2001as my reference I understood that the
250 D ( GD ) model designation (4 cyl 94 bhp) was exclusive to the 463 series , the nearest equivalent in the 461 series being the ( exclusively military ) 250 GD this being 5 cyl 84 bhp, the civilian equivalent 461 being the 290 GD = 5 cyl 95 bhp
Perplexed,
Marcus

Oh S***!

Touché again!

You are absolutely right.... the one with 95 BHP in W461 guise was the 290GD, not the 250GD.

But it's good that somebody catches me!

Digging up in my files, I discovered another Binz ambulance at the Merklinger meeting in June:

Jesus,
So does that mean that this Binz is 463 based ?
still leaves a discrepency in the cyl count per the advert, have e-mailed for clarification.
Thank you in the meantime

No, it's definitely a W460 SW LWB (type 460.338), of which just 436 were made. However, it's got the more modern 5 cylinder diesel (OM602), which is similar in design and construction to the 6-cylinder fitted to the W463 bar for one less cylinder.

Regarding the claim that just four were made, I think that it refers to the figure of units made with this specific configuration, because as you can see from the pictures above, it's likely that they made more than four Binz ambulances.

These also look like Binz conversions (this time based on a 463 G):

Phew! I bet the handling gets a bit exciting with a load or a couple of passengers in the back

What?

You don't carry a "load or a couple of passengers in the back"......

It's where the mother-in-law rides.

on her own.

Problem is if she's as fat as mine...
