The fluid for the power steering of your G (and any contemporary Mercedes) is nothing but Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). You can buy a Dexron type fluid at any Halfords, but I don´t know whether this would be substantially cheaper than buying the "steering box oil" from your Mercedes garage (I bought one litre Castrol Dexron III from Halfords and it was £ 6.20!!!!)

You can also buy Slick 50 power steering fluid, which not only rejuvenates seals but makes quite a dramatic reduction in pump noise. However I must add that KY works well on my ball joint!
