Hi Members.

By profession I work as an Architect and am married with 2 children. I have a passion for Classic cars and have both a W123 and a W114 (Coupes) as part of my collection.

I've recently joined the GWOA in the hope that I can get a better insight into the G Wagon range. I purchased a 1992, 300GD LWB and whilst the car is in exceptional condition for its age, I would like some advise on possibly increasing its torque or bhp. I am not a boy racer (those days are long gone) but would like a little more power when needed. Can anyone suggest a solution (a change of engine is not an option) although I may consider a Turbo version in the future. I have read up on the subject but it's all a bit too confusing as I am told its not really possible to do anything with a Non-Turbo engine. Current bhp on the 300Gd is 113bhp. I've recently had the car serviced with all new Filters including replacing the Injectors.

I live in Cheshire and whilst I have some leads I would prefer to take advise from fellow GWOA members and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Afaq

Welcome to the Gwoa,

Does your G have standard wheels, tires?  Presume no binding brakes?Oversize wheels will not help your lack of power. Think you have to take the G for what it is,not want you want to hear but 603 very smooth and reliable if not ideal for cut and thrust of city motoring.

Re: Introduction to fellow GWOA members

Hi I have a similar G Wagen so I appreciate your desire for more hp/torque!

The 603 is a great engine but a G Wagen is a pretty heavy beast for it to drag around.

Although it's been serviced I'd also suggest carrying out a moly lube diesel purge. It really does work.

The 603 has quite un diesel characteristics in that it likes rev's. If you want to make rapid(ish) progress keep it over 3k.

I'm not sure if getting someone to open up the injector pump will have any effect, I  never tried.

Next option would be to turbo it. The factory 603 turbo has around 147bhp I think.

I went the 606 route when my 603 died. It's the normally aspirated version and in the scale of things an easy swap.

Russ, did you retain your 603 injection pump on your conversion?

No. The 606na has a mechanical pump.

I did keep the 603 one as a spare or donor for a super pump though.

the 603 turbo has a bad rep in its 3.5 litre format
