Hi

I bought a 280GE back in October...

I am looking to improve the drive of the car

Through my little research online I have found that the best shock absorbers is between Sachs and Koni - Which of the 2 is the better?

Also

Adding 30ml spacers improve the drive I had read too - Is this true!

Any other tips for improving the 280GE!

Also can someone recommend the best brakes manufacturer?

Thank you all in advance.

What's wrong with the drive at the moment?

Very hard when going over speed bumps even speed bumps ( and I don't fly them) - doesn't feel as secure on the road as when I used to drive a R.R - I know this is because of the 4x4 permanent drive. But I just can't bell love the G and will not sell it.

Has it got big wheels fitted ? The standard 15" rims with big chunky tyres soak up all lumps n bumps. But if someone has pimped it with big rims and elastic band tyres it'll knock your teeth out on gravel !

Re: Improve 280GE Drive.

I replaced my bilsteins with Sachs sportline (£50 ea. online). They seem pretty good quality but they are firm.

I've not tried Koni on a G Wagen but my perception is that they can be pretty stiff, even the adjustable one's. Also around double the price.

A G Wagen will/should always feel stiffer than any Range Rover. IMHO nothing much you can do about that.

Some people are a bit sneery about Monroe but I had those on my 460 and I was really impressed. Probably slightly softer than my Sachs (on my 463).
Compared to Koni a real bargain as well. Same for kyb, some good reviews on those which are also a bargain.

Spacers are more for aesthetics, maybe some improvement in cornering but they won't do anything for ride quality.

You're right buddy ! They are the standard rims n boots ! They should be soaking up the bumps nicely !

Maybe you do need investigate some softer shocks ?

Yes I think you are right , could be as simple as the shocks!

Re: Improve 280GE Drive.

Russ mentioned Monroe. I have those fitted on my 280ge W460 and think the ride is fine. (might be a route to explore)

(I have also driven many many RR's)

Re: Improve 280GE Drive.

Hi Mark,

One day !wink

I am plodding through many niggles but she's running great now ! My new wiper spindles have been supplied incorrectly. The nipples which the arms attach to differ in position from the one which i removed and has caused no end of grief. I think they have supplied LHD ones.

Once that is sorted i'll be hot on your tail !!!

Neil.
