that the GWOA finally got a propper plattform to meat.

hi everybody,

my name is flo, and up to march '03 i was living in london. it was allways a kind of difficult to get together with other members of the GWOA. once a year the AGM, ok, but that one on a date i eventually couldn't attend. now with the forum, i think for all of those who are still living in the uk, it's much easier to coordinate regional meetings.
very good.
now i'm back in munich, but not less of an enthusiast for the g-wagen. finished the mod's on my G560 (which was born as a 350TD and converted into a V8 with a 5.6 M117 engine ), and having allready plans for a new toy for rally purposes.

as some of you might know, in germany we have regional "clubs" in some areas, beside the overall G-Club. i'm a member in the bavarian g club, and take care about their webside. please feel free to visit g-club-sued.de

if anybody needs some advice where to buy parts in germany, or where to get specific mod's don't hesitate to contact me. i'll try to help.

the little picture attched is my G560 in front of the "Friedensengel" (the angel of peace) in munich.

rgds and all the best with this forum

hi mark and guerdeval,

sorry guy's the car isn't to give a away, nether the wheels. not even for lot's of money.
but guerdeval, you could have the tires. 285-60-18 they'll go in about a week time.
i ordered something special in the states: 35-12.5-18 BFG MT.
so i can keep my good looking 18 inch alloys, and still have a good working MT.

i'll make a pic and will report as soon as they're here.

You couldn't say how much could you?

I was wondering how much those BFG MT T/A are gonna cost you? I saw them in a pic on a military danish G. Very interesting. Could you not get them in the UK or from Europe? The pic is in my intro. I was planning to get a spare set of standard merc G 18 alloys and put these bad boys on for purely of roading purposes(like in the pic). The info would be much appreciated.

hallo du rosa leopard,

had a quick look on that picture that you have in you're intro. i've got to say: sorry mate, these are 16 rims. they look like 18's but they're actually 7.5x16. you see, that danish G has a 3400 mm wheelbase. it has most probably the same axis that i have (5 tonnes), and is therefore road legal up to 5-6 tonnes. this "look-a-like" 18 wheel is the only wheel in the daimler wheel selection that has clearence for that weight.
you'll find these wheels usually on armored or other heavy duty military g's.
they're going mostly with the standart size 265/75 - 16 tires.
there is a nice thread going on @ benzworld.org on that toppic.

coming back to my tires. no way to get them over here. not in the uk, or europe.
the tire has no "european-sign" and therfore it's allmost impossible to get it road-legal here. well, allmost...
i figured that even the "ordnung muss sein"-institute called TUEV can be a very flexible and forthcoming service orientated organisation. you just got to know who to ask, and how... :?: :!:

i imported them via a small off-road-tire dealer in north-bavaria, who's got good connections to prettymuch everybody in the off-road-world.
tirerack.com list's them as well, but they wanted 1000 $ for shipping.....
...f*** that.....

if you want something very special, get your self 17 rims. and than aim for the bfg mt in
37x12.5 - 17. thats for sure something nobody in the uk has, except some hummerdrivers, may be...... :D

Tyres and alloys

Very Interesting, I stand corrected. Now I've had a close look you can definitely see the difference. Your alloys look like the Brabus 18" alloys they offer for the G-Class. You say I should get some 17" rims, do Mercedes-Benz make any, I have been looking on the ORC website at the all the ones they sell, unfortunately I can't make sense of the english version of the site. I don't understand the figures for the rims :? .Do you know of any other good web sites that offer loads of mods for the G like ORC, doesn't matter if they are in German, I can just use an on-line translation engine if needs be. Thanks Vermy much Flo.

Adrian.

P.S. brabus.co.uk are advertising an uber diesel G, G400 CDI Bi-trubo 350Bhp for £95,950, anyone interested!

adrian,

try the german part of the orc webpage. that you don't understand the sizes of the wheels is understandable. they just pulished the ET (Einpress-Tiefe) figures.
that's a figure in millimeters that tells you how many millimeters from the middle of the wheel the hub is away. for excample on the "newer" standart mercedes "flat" wheel in 7.5x16, the ET is -63 , that means the hub is 63 millimeters to the outside from the wheel and therfore it looks flat. if the hub is rather "inside" from the middle of the wheel (in direction to the car) that figure is a + xx millimeter.
orc actually don't have 17" wheels on their webpage, but extrem has.
www.extrem-motorsport.de (they've got a lot of G stuff as well)
daimler never made some 17" for the g, but brabus did. it was the monoblock II or the monoblock III if i remember right. (see pic)
mine are monoblock IV in 18" but they also have 20"s (monoblock VI).

by the way, i managed to track down the crew-cab pic up from danmark. it's in south germany for the moment and privatly owned by a danish guy. he would sell it, but asks for 55.000 euros. rather a lot for a 290 TD, but a very special car though....

If you wanna go one better sometime, I read this press realease on BF Goodrich's website, http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/bfgapp/news/press_release/11042003A.jsp
saying that they are going to produce 20" All Terrains 50-50%On-Off road. I don't know if they'd actually fit the 20" brabus alloy though. Now that would be a wagen wheel! Thanks for the info, if I won the lottery I would buy that crew cab g-wagen any day.
Cheers, Adrian.

@ adrian.

thanks for that info. the tire would actually fit the brabus wheel. the monoblock VI in 20" is 9.5 wide, so it easyly can host those rubbers.
orc has some 20"s as well. that would also be an option. let me see how i go with my mt's.

@ peter.
first conversion was done by extrem motorsport in 99. but it's a propper conversion with engine holding arms from the '93 500 GE. the 5.6 liter M117 engine is the same from the outside as the 5 liter, so you can use all parts from the special edition 500 GE of 1993.earlier this year the engine blew up, so i got orc to put an AMG 5.6 liter in. cooling is done via a dubai modell (stronger) visco blower, but will be changed for an e-blower from the 400 cdi early next year. the e-blower has some advantages. it doesn't kill 10 hp, it works even on high revs and with a switch in the daschboard you can put it on "off" (if you want to go through water), "on" if you climb longer hills, or "automatic" in dependence of temperatures in standart driving.
obviously there is an extra oil-cooler in the right wheelarch.

what happened to the 350TD engine in 99 i don't know ...

do you feel extrem are better than orc, is that your car on extrem website, roughly what are the cost for them to supply and fit 500/560 in my 460 with auto box.

peter,

extrem stopped their garage business. they're still doing there distribution an webbusiness though. somewhere on the websites there is my 560, but there are a lot of pictures of the 300 GEL that i had before. was a RHD car.

since extrem has stopped the repair, fitting and customizing shop, there is only orc to go to. sure, there are other people in germany who did V8 conversions before, but orc did plenty (about 25 i guess). for a 300 GE (463) they would ask about 22.000 € all in. which is a lot, but you get a propper job done, and warranty.
for a 460 i don't know, but i doubt that it is worth it.
and if something goes wrong, the only mechanic that would know something about the car is about 900 miles away from you. anyway, if you want that car for serious off-roading, i recoment the M117 in 5 liter, not in 5.6. the 5.6 has more elektric parts (injection) and is not as bulletproof as the 5.0.

howere, if you go ahead with your conversion, let me know. i would like to know how you go....
