I'd really like to buy a slightly newer and motorway friendly G - so probably a G55 circa 2009 but I know that if the side step is much higher than on my current G300 then my wife is only going to moan every time she enters and exits.

So then I have to weigh up pros and cons.

Does anyone know what the height of the side steps on the G55 are?

One I've seen for sale has 275/55/19 tyres on in case that makes much difference.

Silly question, I know.

Re: Height of G55 side step

Hello,

Relative to the door, all the original stainless-steel clad  MB side-steps have the same drop. As far as I know, all W463, G-Wagens, both old and new have the same rolling circumference on the tyres, regardless of wheel size (tyre profile changes), so there should be no height difference in the side-step height from the ground.

Of course if you currently have a 3rd-party sidesteps, these may be set lower than the originals and so you may therefore  find a height difference from the ground.

Compared to the standard 265/70 R16 of the G300, the 275/55 R19 wheels you mentioned will increase the ride height by a theoretical less than 4mm

http://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=265&aspect=70&diameter=16&wheelwidth=8&offset=40&width2=275&aspect2=55&wheel_size=19&wheel_width=9-5&offset2=20

The AMG suspension may actually ride a little lower for high-speed stability.

If you not using it off road, you can get electric steps that come down, look at quality motorhomes.?

Re: Height of G55 side step

Thanks Arnie,

Yes - I do have non-standard side steps on my 300SWB which is why I wondered what the height from the ground is with factory fitted steps.

I'm afraid that if I go and look at a G55 then consideration of step height will go out the window and I'll come home with something my wife won't get into (maybe that's a good thing?)

As you can see from the pic, the step surface is level with the ends of the wheel-arch extensions. Also it's lower than the centre-hub of the wheels. I'd say about 36cm off ground level.
