Gs and the LEZ (Low Emission Zone) in London
Hi everyone! Glad to have joined your company..
I bought my first 1999 G350 TD a few months ago in Germany and had it nationalized without any difficulties.
Ive been IMMENSELY enjoying the ride which I have to say, has been unequal to anything I have previously driven..
I was about to embark on a throughout restoration journey, when I was hit by a penalty charge for £500 for having entered the Low Emission Zone (in place now in London) without paying the £100 a day charge.. Of course I am in shock and was wondering if there is anything I can do to improve the situation..
Does anyone have the same problem?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Hi Lucho,
First I thought that LEZ was for commercial vehicles only but reading through this link, it appears to be potentially all vehicles.

There are many ways of dealing with this, some of which are in the linked article. Personally I know a number of people got a hydrogen system similar to mine as it give an almost zero rating. Cost is around £300. One off. There is quite a lot of infor i looked at and you can find it under alternative fuels section.

Other people on this forum are more qualified but as a first step it would be interesting to know which car you own: a 350TD (1992 - 1996) or a 300TD (1996 - 2001); to my knowledge the 300TD can be converted to Euro 3 the 350TD can't.
checking my reg on their website https://lowemissionzone.tfl.gov.uk/b/pb/lezComplianceProvideVRM.faces my vehicle shows up as exempt. From memory, old Gs show up as 'Estate Cars' in the DVLA database so I wonder if that is why... What happens if you put your registration number in Lucho?
Funnily enough, I'v e just this week sent off the V5 for my land rover 110 station wagon, as it was showing as "4x4 light utility" and this is a big wagging NO finger from Boris and his cronies at TFL. I even tried filling in the forums with photo's and sending them to the TFL office, but I got a sore head from the constant banging against a brick wall.. my local MP couldn't sway them either.
ANyway, a helpful chap on one of the LR forums suggested I just send my V5 off to the DVLA, include some pictures (of the LR obviously.... not my dog or the wife, although pics of the wife might help LOL) and fill in the bodytype (section 7) to "estate" and then the TFL should be able to check and see that the vehicle is in fact a station wagon with seats. and not a van/kastenwagen.
If you've put the numberplate into the TFL's site and it comes back as excempt, then a phone call to get it rectified should be all thats needed?
I'll have a guess your vehicle isn't correctly registered. Shouldn't fall into any of the categories of LEZ.
I put my registration in the site and this come up for my My 290GD 1998 Steyr Puch not subject to LEZ as seen below
15 Jan 2015 to onwards

Not Subject to LEZ

What does not subject to the Low Emission Zone mean? According to our records this vehicle is not subject to the Low Emission Zone and is not required to meet the Low Emission Zone standards this time. |

Hi Lucho,
firstly I don't think they made a 99' g350TD, they did however make a 99'G300 TD......
i have a 92' G350 TD and it is emmision free in london (LEZ)You can appeal it very easy as I had to do this as well, get the data card from mercedes then you have to show the age of the vehicle/model etc. easiest way is to get a advert of a g350td for sale in the UK, type the reg number of that vehicle then if it shows up on the LEZ site as clear use this as evidence to London transport, send in all paperwork and you should get the clear.
is the car UK registered?
