The steering system feels a little rough on my 2015 G63, particularly when reversing.  I can feel/hear a grinding sensation/noise.   Is this a typical characteristic of the recirculating ball system or is it something I need to get checked out?

No, it's not typical, and if still under warranty (2015 vehicle?), get it seen to ASAP, as a new steering box is ££££££££££££££££££££££

You might just check that the power-steering fluid is at the right level. Other possibilities are the ball-joints on the steering and  track rods, particularly if their protective rubber boots have been damaged and therefore have dried/corroded..

Re: Grinding in steering system

The re-circulating ball system is virtually bullet proof. Although I am not up to date with the new system employed on the latter G-Wagens, I am aware that the new power steering pump employed had some noise issues. I would try and listen out for noise in this area whilst an assistant slowly and carefully reverses for you.

I cannot fathom out why a vibration could be felt only whilst in reverse but do check reservoir fluid level and top up as necessary. Note the latter type G-Wagens use a special oil and not the standard ATF universally used in the earlier models. Should you have to top up you may need to find out the source of fluid loss as well.

Other possibilities could the universal joints inside and engine compartment ares used on the steering column, these sometimes need to freed and lubricated using some penetrating oil followed by small measure of oil squirted over the joints. BUT for the vibration to be apparent in reverse is throwing me and I cannot offer any other logical explanation - sorry.

Thanks for the feedback, I will get it checked when it goes in for the steering recall.
