On my manual 460 the gear stick is splitting and needs a replacement. It's been that way for at least 15 years.

For now I want to replace the rubber gaiter and have one. But it would be a very tight fit to get it over the gear knob, so it now has to come off anyway.

I can see a locking nut, and I assume it is threaded the normal way, but if I try to free it, it's trying to twist the whole stem. So I assume you have to somehow grip the stem. There is no hex nut for this. Mole grips will struggle on the smooth stem. Any tips?

Well, I went to take the photo of how I couldn't do it, had another go with the mole grips and hey presto.

Once off, I cleaned up and repaired the split gear knob (with super glue, as experience has shown that lasts much better than rubberised glue). Then it fitted tight back on with the new boot. And yes the thread is standard, so clockwise to unlock it from the knob. I.e. screw it down away from the knob

Hope this helps.
