Gear selector problem

Some time ago the gear selector on my LWB G300DT Auto got stuck and would only move between reverse, neutral and drive.  I've lived with it like this for a while but now it has started to not always change up a gear when it should and sometimes it changes down before it should.  I guess I have 2 questions.

1. Is it possible to repair the selector? If so, how do I take it out?

2. If it's not repairable, where can I get a new one?

It seems likely to be worn selector bushes. There are two bushes per selector. Renew these, they should not be expensive.

Hello Richard,

Looking at your statement highlighted in yellow suggests to me a mechanical problem, perhaps something(s) dropped in the gear selector channel preventing Parking and the Manual gear selector movement. Your latter statement (in green) suggests an internal problem. Firstly, If there is a dip stick to check gearbox level - check the gearbox oil, if replenishing is required, then there could be a leak you are also looking out for.

Check vacuum hoses feed to gear box from engine.

After that you need to talk to some one who knows what they are talking about. 

RE: Repairing the selector, there is not much that can go wrong but for a physical blockage of some sort affecting the selector travel. A new one is dealer part only.

Thanks very much for the info. It seems that the gearbox oil level can only be checked by a main dealer. There is a dip stick tube but no dip stick, and a sticker saying 'MB service only'. I'll check the vacuum hoses and look for a blockage in the selector channel. Otherwise - off to the main dealer  sad

The lack of dipstick indicates a post-1999 vehicle? You can break the seal and buy a dipstick from MB. (it's a generic, very long one, which unfortunately cannot remain in the tube, unless you cut it,)
 It seems, though, that you probably have an electronically controlled gear-box, so a diagnosis by MB or an independent with an appropriate scan tool is probably in order.

The electronically-controlled gearboxes work on the vehicle's powertrain CANbus and do not use vacuum hoses to determine shift points.

Please can you clarify your vehicle model and year.
