G400 CDi in RHD???
I'm seriously considering buying a G400 CDi, having seen a piece on it in Autocar. Can anyone tell me whether it is available in RHD?
I appreciate it isn't officially imported to the UK but it occurred to me that it might be built in right hand drive for another market (South Africa? Malta?) and that I might be able to get hold of one on import. Any advice?
Unfortunately, all production of RHD G-Wagens was terminated in 2001, being the last made the G500 (463) and the 290GDT (461). Anything that has the newer dashboard (with climate control and Sat-Nav) is post-2001 and that includes the new models G270 and G400 CDI.
This means that you'll never find a factory made RHD G of the following models: G320 (6 in-line and V6), 350 GDT/G350DT, G300DT, G400CDI and G270CDI.
As a curiosity, the only country where people drive on the left that imports G-Wagens nowadays is Japan, and these are all LHD (G320 and G500, no diesels).
Hope this helps.
Cheers
I don't know about converting LHD to RHD, there are companies that do this for around the £6K mark but I don't know if they would do a G Wagen

I did actually see a recent model a couple of months ago which I believe was a CDi in Obsedian Black, LWB, 2002 Model with low mileage. It was expensive though, about £43K at Caversham Garage.
Probably your best bet would be to take a trip to Germany and buy a second hand one and drive it back. I bet you'd get one for a lot less that £30k that way, even if you bought from a Mercedes Dealer. And I may be wrong, but I don't think you pay any VAT as it is a second hand vehicle.

You could in theory have a pre-2002 G500 converted from LHD to RHD. The dashboard existed in RHD, so it´s only a matter of buying the relevant parts and have them fitted, although it´s a very expensive exercise.
With regard to the 350 GDT/G350DT and G300GDT, I know for a fact that the reason for MB never bothering to produce in RHD was the turbo/inlet and exhaust manifolds being in the way of the RHD steering column. I suspect that this would again be the problem with the G270 and G400 CDI. Also, these have a new dashboard that was never offered in RHD models.
Bottom line is, that even if you had the cash the conversion to RHD would not just be case of buying of-the-shelf parts and fitting them, but a design and engineering feat.

That´s absolutely correct: if you want a RHD, you´ll have to use your wallet and buy a very are and expensive G500 or if you want a G400CDI it will be cheaper but LHD only. If you can prove that the car originally paid VAT in any EU country the actual cost of importing the car into the UK will be a 25 pound registration fee plus the road tax.
You can othewise naturally wait until this country becomes a republic associated to the EUROPEAN superstate and then everybody will be driving on the right of the road so there will be no drawback to driving a LHD car!
There's currently a new LWB 400CDI (Sept 2003 with 100 miles) at Mercedes Mayfair for a cool £63k. It is though, LHD.

Many thanks for this. I don't suppose there's any way of getting a LHD model converted to RHD?
Alternatively, do you know where I might be able to buy a recent secondhand G400 CDi in left-hand-drive?
