Hi all,

Firstly, congrats on the excellent site, it has been an invaluable fountain of knowledge in my pursuit of a G- I have been a somewhat long-term lurker :)

Recently the urge to pull the trigger on a purchase has been getting greater and I thought I would invite any views on  the following as I certainly don't know much myself!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Benz-G-WAGON-463-2014-BRABUS-STYLING-...

One thing I have found whilst searching for a G has been the HUGE variation in prices- there seems to be no guideline! Do you guys feel the price is fair or optimistic?

I know the visual 'upgrades' may not be to everyone's taste but would it be very expensive to recreate this on another G?

Thanks in advance for any and all opinions

All the best- Mark

Re: G400

I'm not able to advise you on price but you should research the issues with the G400 Cdi;  there is a consenus to avoid the early cars (2002 falls into this category):  the electrics/ electronics are famously unreliable due to the CAN-bus system; the engines had issues, make sure that the camshaft chain has been replaced (£3k replacement cost); on the other hand, a friend of mine has owned one for more than ten years, he had his fair share of problems but loves the engine.

Re: G400

HI and welcome.

As mentioned in the post above, there are some well known issues with the G400's, which is a shame as it almost the perfect combination on paper, a nice V8 power and speed with the frugality of a diesel and a G. But beware, its not supported in the UK so finding parts and people who know the engine is going to be difficult.

The members posts to watch out for would be Krad and Goouchie, both have owned the 400 and can give you loads of practical 'user' information.

Re: G400

Thanks for the heads up guys- will definitely have to give it some further consideration: I'm sure parts aren't cheap should something go wrong!

Thanks once again for the info & the welcome- Mark

Re: G400

Seems quite cheap compared to  some I've seen  that could be due to the poor reputation of the V8 diesel or the messed with body work.

If I was in the market for such a vehicle I'd go petrol V8 every time.

Re: G400

Hi Russ,

Thanks for the input- ideally, from what i've read, i would prob prefer a petrol V8 as well. I will try my best to be a little patient- there certainly are more expensive ones out there but 27k is still a lot and as I understand, can be just the start!

Re: G400

400 is a v complicated engine should something go wrong. And unfortunately its reputation is not good. V8 petrol from the same year would be better. I don't know what your taste is on bodywork, but scratch that Brabus stuff and you would be up for a lot of money to replace. If you like something different then it might be for you

I have a 2001 G400 and the only issue that I have had with it - which took a while to figure out - was the engine stopping intermittently. This was due to a faulty capacitor in the ECU, but after sorting it, no other problems.

I hear that on pre-2002 versions, the camshaft chain tensioner will need replacing if the chain  becomes rattle, but not needed to do that yet.

I think that it's the same stories going around that give the G400 an undeserved reputation, for reliability.

True, the G400 was never sold in the UK, but the engine is not entirely unknown. The S400, GL420 and ML420 have essentially the same engine and I have had no issues with servicing at Brooklands and obtaining parts.

The electrics are mostly from the c-class and are all multiplexed, fly-by-wire wiring to control all functions and lighting through central modules. It gives flexibility and reduces the amount of wires, but  yes, the system is not as robust, as on the previous generation with its point-to-point wiring, chunky switches with silver plated contacts, heavy gauge copper wiring, and relay modules as the most complex bits of electronics. Having said that, I've not really had any wiring/electronic issues on the G400, other than noting that the wiring connectors are definitely cheapened and can fall off on their own (eg from window switch on drivers door) and would not look out of place in a PC. The electronically controlled transfer case can very occasionally forget what gear it's in - I don't like that system- the original manual level is 100% better. However, the same electronics are now prevalent everywhere, so if you want traditional wiring you need to limit yourself to vehicles before 2000.

Of course, the engine is really shoehorned into the engine bay and there is little or no space to work on it, without dismantling a lot of parts for access.

It has massive torque -more than the G500- and is great to drive, although the extra 100kg is noticeable up front.

As for Brabus - I don't get it. It seems that their styling is designed to look different - almost at any cost - and it doesn't look right or aesthetically pleasing to me. The g has been around for 35 years and has a classic look. Fitting a front grille with two twin lights may look cool and different today, but will be sorely outdated tomorrow. The g is designed as an offload vehicle and not as an autobahn-stormer. 20" wheel with all that unsprung mass of live axles will make for a sore ride. Just my opinion.

Re: G400

If you are looking at a G400, you obviously don't mind LHD.

In that case, there's a much bigger choice in Germany and there you will find some G400 at good prices - including some early ones with intergalactic miles - so they can't all have been that unreliable. But you will also find the G270 Cdi and other models that may take your fancy.

Re: G400

That car used to live a few hundred metres from me, I saw it about a few times. It was up for sale privately for a while, first at about £35k, then £30k, then £25k before this trader must have bought it. It certainly stands out, I think it would look a lot better with some projector headlights.

Re: G400

Thank you all so much for the info. Honestly, after being made aware here, and then reading up a bit more, the thing that probably scares me more than anything would be the potential electrical issues. I used to own an H2 and a few electrical problems quickly turned into an absolute nightmare and very expensive to (never completely) resolve. If this particular model is infamous for such issues, I would probably be better off steering clear: part of the draw of the G is their reputation for being sturdy and reliable trucks aside Crome anything else :)

I trust my G350td more than the 2001-05 g400 cdi's any day !

buy an early diesel, petrol 91-2000. You'll never see many probs

Re: G400

Thanks for the suggestions- will definitely look into the earlier models ('91-2000). That 500 at Avantgarde looks great (and a RHD!) but unfortunately they are asking for a little more than i can manage right now.

thats way overpriced in my eyes, I picked up a 2001 G500 X plate  LWB RHD for a mere £19500 in 2011, and they were about that figure till last week I saw two for about £35k???

keep looking one will defiantley pop up soon for cheap money.

Re: G400

I've had a G400 for a year, no problems so far but I am mindful of other advice on here. Bought mine in Italy for £27k, about £11k cheaper than equivalent advertised dealer prices in UK. 2004 car with 52k miles, one lady owenr - honest.
