Hello guys, I am new to this forum. Thank you for accepting me in this great community!

I would need some advice from you guys about a car that I am willing to buy but the auto transmission is dead.

The car is sitting for almost 2 years and all the fluid from the tranny was lost. We added new fluid but the tranny would not move the car. Also when in reverse you can hear a light griding noise. The transmission was left in a functional condition 2 years ago. Now the questions guys, what can I do with this transmission, is it something specific for this kind of trannys or what could have happened?               I found at a friend of mine a W123 auto transmission. Is it swapable? Can I use that W123 tranny?        Is it at least usable for spare parts for rebuilding the original one?  Please give me some advice.

Thank you,

Mihai

Re: G 280 GE auto transmission problem.

Hello Mihai,

I cannot think why the gearbox should not work after filling it up (hopefully this was some 6.5 lts of ATF oil) it could be a new oil filter may also be required.

Other than that there may be a possibility that the clutch band material has disintegrated in the dry state the gearbox has been? I do not know, I am simply conjecturing.

The ideal step to take is check with gearbox pressure gauge if the gearbox is firstly building oil pressure.

An alternative gearbox may fit if the starter motor is on the same side other than that you are advised to check on the difference in gear ratios as this will affect the driving characteristics of  the vehicle in terms of speed, economy and shift point  of gears.

OR have you current gearbox re-conditioned. Reconditioning costs are circa £1300 plus VAT plus package and postage.
