I broke down today...Even though my guage was reading 1/4 full I walked 2miles to get a can of diesel as it felt like I ran out of fuel...once i put in the gallon and pumped the primer to expell air, it worked ok, I drove for about a mile and it went again I noticed the fuel filter looked cloudy even though it is only 3months old. I called AA to take me home. on arrival he checked it out and found the inline fuel filter which I bought from partco had disintegrated inside to a paper mush... Anyone know why? All I did this week was add an STP concentrated Injector cleaner. Could it be this?
AA guy removed it and said I didnt really need it as the main filter does all necessary.
It now works perfectly again maybe even better than before as it seemed lumpy over the last couple of days

Filter

Greeny,
Don't have an answer but you have me worried.
What make was the filter?
Was it an additional filter you had fitted?
Have you checked the main filter?

Want to know as I have just put some injector cleaner through my wifes 2.5TDi VW. Don't even want to think how much an injector pump for that would be if it got contaminated!!

Fuel Filter

Greeney I buy my diesel filters from MB. The inline filter is only £1 and the main filter £5 for the 463 . I would recommend using the genuine parts and see if that helps. Also carry spare inline filter for roadside repairs. I can't understand why a treatment would distroy the filter.

Filter

Dont get me wrong.. The AA guy said it could have been the cleaner but not certain. Thing is though I use it quite regularly.. as in once every couple of months and nothing has happened before. I bought the inline filter from "Partco" and dont remember the name..I will certainly consider MB in future it was just I forgot the inline when i ordered all my service parts from them and made a dash down to Dover to buy one.
I am sure it could have been anything, even though I was showing 1/4 tank it could have been low enough to pick up some water or rubbish from the tank. I had just spent the morning pulling people out of snow drifts.LOL
I am not even sure wether I will fit another one. It DIDNT have one on before i fitted it and the AA guy said there wasnt much reason for it as the main filter will do it all. He was also very UP on the 300 diesel MB as he used to work on them for a Specialist MB company.
Said they were bullet proof if serviced well...

The problem, I believe, is that most people confuse the old fuel filter for carburettor engines with the prefilter used for diesels such as the one of your G. I have in more than one ocassion ordered the prefilter of my older 300GD (exact engine to yours) only to find out that the inside were made of paper which disintegrates in contact with diesel.

Solution? follow Roly's advice and buy original MB filters or at least buy good quality aftermarket using the correct reference for the OM617 engine.

Ahh

That could be it then I just asked at partco for a fuel filter... Why has it taken so long though. About 2500/3000miles to go.

If you still have it, cut the filter open to see if it is disintegrated, which I doubt. Sounds more like you've sucked up some sludge from the fuel tank. So the wee filters taking all the blame but I'll bet it's just done what it's supposed to and got clogged up in the process and therefore stopped the flow. If it had disintegrated then it would have ended up in the main filter and you probably wouldn't have noticed. Recommend you refit a prefilter as this is easier to change at the roadside than the main one, should you find yourself in the same situation. AA and Rac blokes will tell you anything!!!

Tank gauze

Greeny ,I would agree with rustbucket,in that if there was a problem with some "over the counter"filters and particular fuels it would have to be highlighted on them.Having said that, original mb prefilters are cheap so there is no reason not to have a spare or two in the lovely mb boxes sitting on your dashboard or mantlepiece even.Have you considered the little gauze prefilter at the bottom of your fuel level sender/pickup pipe tube.It is worth a look.
I posted this next message on the benzworld forum minutes ago

At the bottom of your sender is a gauze mesh prefilter, which if clogged would put all joints upstream under a lot of vacuum, possibly drawing air in.I do'nt know if this is a likely scenario, but I do know that the gauze can clog,in my case so much that it had gone concave from the suction. In fact a mechanic friend could'nt believe the G still ran considering the amount of tar-like goo stuck on the filter, not a speck of light could get through,so it was hard to see much diesl getting through.Pull the rubber bellows with the mesh off and clean, if it looks suspect.
I have'nt had a chance to drive since due to other jobs on the G but I am hoping for an improvement in performance when I do
good luck
