Hi I am a new member .1985 300 gd swb , I will be doing a job on my front drivers side wheel bearing next week , I have the wheel  bearings seals etc ; It failed its nct mot on up and down movement associated with wheel bearings .I got the mercedes parts bearings seal etc ;Has  anyone done this job ? I have the special socket for the hub , Is their bearings in the king pins that might need changing or is it normally just the wheel bearings?I am reading about the shims and the spacer washers , which I bought extra just in case , and have read that the originals must be put back exactly in top and bottom , If their is still play up and down after the wheel bearings are done will the shims and or spacer washers take this out or are their king pin bearings need replacing at this stage? Or is it normally just the wheel bearings?

Re: front wheel bearings

You should be able to differentiate between wheel bearing play and swivel bearing play? Easiest way is to get someone to apply footbrake with wheel off the ground and try to rock it. If no play probably wheel bearing, but if still play swivel bearing. Those parts a bit cheaper, probably your cv boots shot, which you may as well do at the same time. Enough been written on here about this job

Re: front wheel bearings

If it was me I'd change the king pin bearings whilst I was in there. In fact I'd change everything! It's not a difficult task but it's not a pleasure either.

You don't want to dismantle it twice.

As in previous post I'd expect the cv boot to have disintegrated. Your cv maybe ok if the hub has been well packed with good quality grease.

Replacing the cv boot, unless you have the correct tool is an absolute bitch, you'll need 2 people and some strength.

Re: front wheel bearings

Oh and save yourself some money, get the bearings from someone like Bearing Man.

You only need to get the seals from MB.
