Hi all, Happy new year to ye ,I am wondering is their anyone out their who can help me ,I have recently changed the front wheel bearing and kingpin bearings etc  on my g wagon 1985 300gd .I still have a small bit of play up and down on the hub even after adjustment ,I heard that the hub can be worn on the inner splines , has anyone got some experience on this matter and or where to get one ,any info on this would be gladly appreciated , Dave

Re: front drivers side hub

Hi

You have lost me there a bit

The spline is for the cv joint and wont affect play in any way

Quick check is to jack car up and get someone to apply footbrake. If play goes away its the wheel bearing

If play is still present the king pin bearings need shims removing to take the play out. People often mess this up and the driveshaft is not central in hub. Later ones have bearings the same size top and bottom

Some earlier models have a different size bearing top and bottom. Check pin diameter and bearing inner id as i have seen some fitted and the pin is not a good fit as they have fitted the larger bore bearing to top and bottom. If this is the case there will always be play and the bearing needs to be changed out. To aid matters the outer bearing race is the same i think but check first

I know its not good practice but you could leave outer race and fit new inner as bearings are new and only turn a bit

Hope this helps. If you have to take it apart again you can check the wheel flange on cv joint while its apart. Im sure it will be fine. Also check flange for any wear to bearing contact surface

Hi

Thanks for quick response , Yes when you press on brake play goes out  of it in the up and down motion , So  are you saying the inner or outer wheel bearing is at fault ? Dave

Re: front drivers side hub

Yes i would think bearings are not tight enough

Tighten the nut to about 40 ftlbs then undo and nip up with fingers as when you tighten lock nut the nut by bearing will move a bit and it will go too tight

Just finger tight or a bit less. Im a fukker for overtightening bearings but like no play and have had no issues yet

Better to run a tad of play than too tight

Glad it helped    ta dahh

There you go cost you nothing. No flange or bearings etc how good is that

                             Happy days

Re: front drivers side hub

The way I've done this is as follows:

With the car on axle stands replace the wheel.
Next bit takes two people. One to tighten the hub nut whilst the other rotates the wheel.
Tighten the hub nut REALLY tight, maybe 200nm. All the while turn the road wheel.
Now loosen the hub nut and then tighten hand tight, plus around an eighth of  a turn. Then do the lock nut bit.

Run it for a few miles and then re check for any movement and for any heat (avoid using the brakes as much as possible before doin this)
