front calipers
I've finally got fed up with my front brakes, I've an ABS equiped GE300 , when braking very hard the car pulls strongly to the right, which tells me the right side caliper is more efficient than the left. Should I replace them as a pair, or just the nearside front, are there any Vito/Spinter alternatives to ridiculous main dealer prices?
thanks
Assuming tyre pressures are ALL OK; now is the pull coming on as the ABS is activated or are you braking short of ABS engaging?
How does the vehicle drive with a light steering hold on it? Doese side it have a Pull bias to any on side, i.e. the sid eyou have the pull to?
Normally if one caliper is seizing then freeing it off should work out but I would suggest cleaning the both at the same time. If one has to be replaced then it is not necesary to replace the other unless you have money to burn. Check the dis condition on both sides not gauge it by how it looks on the outter surface alone which could look fine but the inner surface could be shot.
If there is excessive wear on the disc then obviuosly you would need to change the disc and pads as a set.
Post some photos of the discs (wheel off).
Check piston movement and retraction free off as necessary. Make sure the top and bottom surface where the brake pad rest on is scraped clean. This should give you balanced braking, if not then naturally you will need a new caliper.
NOTE: when pressing the piston out make sure you have something wedged inbetween the disc and caliper piston so you do not push the piston out fully. Then square push them back in. I am assuming you know what to do to free off fthe pistons.
It is quite common the pistons to become the seized or seizing particularly when the cover boots are perished.
I have used Big Red without any problems - calipers came back looking and workiig like new.
This has been a problem for a while so I've had discs pads replaced and serviced to try to resolve it, to no effect, the vaehicle doesnt wander or pull to the right in normal driving or on gentle braking, but brake hard and it pulls to the right. On change over the pads on the right were significantly more worn than those of the left, leading me to conclude the fault is with the left hand side caliper
