And dropped off a sparkling red 1991 300GD!

This SWB example has been well looked after by the orignal owner, a friend of ours.

Having owned nothing but Landrovers I am impressed by the standard of engineering evident throughout the G.

There are a few aspects that will be requiring modifications for our particular use, starting next week with air springs inside the coils at the rear.

Thankyou to all enthusiasts of the G-wagen for sharing your knowledge, ideas and experiences!

Welcome on board. What are air springs and what advantage have they over the normal setup ?

Air springs

Hi Roly

The air spring theoretically gives you adjustable spring rate. I find that my G's springs are a bit soft, particularly evident when hitching a trailer up. I used them successfully on my Defender. The trick is going to be to reinstate the bump stops somehow.

Regards, Adrian

springy springs

Please speak to an expert but I "think" the standard rear spring off a LWB fit the SWB and are classed as heavy duty on the SWB,might be a cheaper option.

Or may be the springs are a bit tired......

.... after 12 years of service. I have a 1991 300 GDS as well an feel that the rear springs need replacing after 12 years of service. I have the same problem with my 20 year old former 300 GD and replace them with a pair of springs from M.R.Holland. The they made difference was amazing.... and very cheap indeed!

Thanks for your responses. The idea of air springs is really their adjustability: otherwise the rear of the car would sit a bit high and ride a bit hard on springs stiff enough to handle heavy loads. Suspension settings are always a compromise I suppose.
