Exhaust help please, W463 Lwb G300 D LHD 1991
Hi everyone, the front pipes and centre box on my G have gone. My garage is struggling to find anything as she is left hand drive. Can anyone help please? Can anyone suggest a European supplier? If I do have to go stainless, is there any advantage in a larger bore? I am tempted to put a 606 in! Thanks
Left hand drive or not, your local Mercedes Benz dealer should not have any difficulties in getting you the exhaust you want.
If you are trying for after market onces only a few are a possibility other wise you could to go stainless steel which is be-spoke and could work out cheaper in the long run. Having said that, M/Benz prices ma be steep in the initial outlay but the exhaust life can be up to some eight to ten years and on that basis its seems fair for the quality.
If you had given your chassis number maybe some one on the forum could have suggested prices and may be by identification recognise a replacement for you. Usually, the manifold, down pipes and some front pipes tend to be dealer parts only.
I'd personsanally go for a stainless steel one and probably ditch the section that crosses over from the offside to nearside.
agree with Russ280 so much of the w463's pipe work is overkill, you can ditch the whole left hand side of the exhaust system and have a side exit on the right without making the system especially loud
Last time I bought a centre box was about £80, front pipes about £180 but 5ish years ago. Went for genuine as wanted to keep it quiet and just bolt parts in. The clamps etc add up, also used stainless bolts to help removal in future. Unfortunately the front pipe required a patch brazing on where the twin pipes go to one, seems to be a weak point as previous down pipe went there. This was right hand drive. Is exhaust different LHD? Presume 606 you will need a new exhaust fabricating from scratch
For yours or 606 project just get it made in stainless
Mine has one small box that runs down side and a pipe exit before rear wheel. Sounds ok and not too loud but a larger box would be better still
I would not increase the bore unless you are doing a 606 conversion. If you do it first though you wont have to mess around later
Stainless and well made is fit and forget for life
the centre box was about £300 from MB, when I replaced one a couple of years ago.
you really don't need the silencer that tucks under the left of the car, the one that seems to double back on itself
I agree with prwales.
£400 seems suspiciously cheap for a full system copy. It's quite a convoluted design, does he actually know what it looks like!
Including down pipes I was quoted £1000 plus, several years ago, so £400 seems a bargain or incorrect
I just paid £740ish + the Vat for a full stainless system - would have been £800 + Vat, but they could not get the downpipes from the engine bay off in the day timescale I set :-) I had a full system on my G500 and went with side exit on passenger side to keep any noise away from the drivers side - You are LHD so if you want to keep the noise down exiting on the other side does sound very doable for £400.
One thing to consider is the center box - mine is petrol 463 so not sure if system is directly comparable - was felt to help remove resonance/vibrations that can be worse with stainless than mild steel originals and mine has non.. We also halved the silencer box, though kept and extended the return loop that comes with the passenger side exit routing as this adds to the V8 burble apparently.
Obviously you won't want to run a center box if you are not crossing over the chassis ladder, but you might want to ask about the resonance - might simply mean a smaller 2 box one sided set up?
All this was fully hand made inc silencer boxes... by an engineering/exhaust/race specialist.
Simon, is i new stainless system noticeably noisier, ?
