Dear all,

I have lost the use of my indicators and also the fuel and temperature gauges on my 1989 300GD. All three items failed at the same time. The gauges worked intermittently for about 2 minutes before failing. Funny thing is that my hazard warning lights still work and my wipers and window washers still work at the ‘stick’. There were slight issues with the gauges before they failed completely in that they would always read 25% higher if the lights were on and would fluctuate up and down in tune with the indicators if the lights and indicators were on. Any suggestions anyone?

Regards,

Colm

Re: Electrical Problems

My guess would be an earthing issue. Check the easy stuff first under the bonnet but its more likely to be behind the dash.

From memory there is an earthing "cluster" low down in the footwell at the A pillar if that makes any sense (i may have dreamt that bit though:-) but you will find it eventually, lots of brown wires all attached to the body.

Re: Electrical Problems

Thanks guys,

Two excellent suggestions, fuses and earths. I have scratched the fuses, breaking 2 in the process so I will have to source some more tomorrow. Still investigating the earthing suggestion. Does anyone know if there are other earthing points beneath the dash of a 460 other than the one in the photo.

Colm

Re: Electrical Problems

Hi Colm

I would go for earth every time with this.... you're in the right place, clean and de rust all the connections, not forgetting the actual body itself and the bolt etc.

It easier to just replace all the fuses with new (drop me a PM with your address and i will post a bag if you're short- i have hundreds!")

Clean the holders as you go...

A couple of links to past similar issues to give you some hope?!?

Relays do stick also and leave issues as they do!!!

Does the G stand for any length of time?

Re: Electrical Problems

Hi Gav,

That’s proper decent of you to offer to send me some fuses. I have already ordered loads of them on ebay, so will not put you to the inconvenience this time but if they do not arrive I might be back to you. smileyIt’s a bank holiday here so I hope to get them when postal deliveries resume.

I will start dismantling the earth wires and tidying them up with a little sandpaper when I have the fuses replaced and the holders touched with a little sandpaper also.

The truck does tend to sit for possibly a week or so between uses so that might be cause of the problem. It has had the small issue with the gauges for about four years but they died all of a sudden along with the indicators. My 7 year old daughter noticed also that the horn was not working when she was helping me dissemble the dash so I believe this to be related also. (Its great having some help with such tasks)

I will keep the forum updated with our progress!

Regards,

Colm

Re: Electrical Problems

Dear all,

Not sure if it was the fuses or the earthing points but a good tidy up of both has resolved the problem for an outlay of less than £4. Thanks for the advice everyone.
