w460 speedo and combo-turn-signal switch
Chassis 021627 RHD 280GE LWB 1982

The speedo is acting up and the turn signal control does not work on right hand turns. At 406,000 miles (2nd engine) and a fill up costs $110 to drive 110 miles, the g wagon is used when I need to haul lots of people or stuff, but not as a daily driver - gets about 600 miles a year. It does show its age from time to time, and this time it is in the cockpit. Advice appreciated.

SPEEDO

The MPH speedo (with small KMH) has developed a click where the speedometer jumps. It's the speedo not the cable.

Advice Sought:

  1. Is this something I can repair, if so, what are the steps? Do I need parts and if so, what part number and who sells them reasonably priced?
  2. Does anyone have a spare they don't need?
  3. Is this a standard MB part that is used in other models. Anyone have any experience with this?
  4. Is there a generic speedo that would fit? It has a mechanical ODO in miles (I live in a KM country, but the g-wagon came from the UK), single light to show turn signal (which I could relocate to the dash) and backlighting.
  5. Anyone found a reliable vendor of a new or used speedo that is not a silly price?

COMBO SWITCH

In the last semi-annual inspection, the right turn signal would flash rapidly, but no action at the lights. They told me to fix it before the next inspection. Hazard flasher works, so it's not the bulb or fuse. We took apart the relay, but it seemed OK. It appears to be the unit on the steering wheel. Horn/turn signals/high-low beams/wiper. Eurotruck Importers lists a late model (after chassis number 024324), which appears to not have the horn button.

Advice sought:

  1. Is this something I can repair, if so, what are the steps?
  2. Does anyone have a spare they don't need?
  3. I read that the W123 stalk is the same. Anyone have any experience with this? If so, what part numbers do I look for? Does it have the horn button?
  4. Is there a difference between RHD and LHD parts (mine is right-hand drive)?
  5. Anyone found a reliable vendor of a new stalk that is not a silly price?
  6. Would the EuroTruck unit work if I found another way to connect the horn? If yes, any suggestions on how to wire in a horn switch?

Re: Early W460 Speedo and Turn Signal Stalk failing

A clicking speedo meter is repairable but best left to the experts, there are speedo meter repairers about. You, as an individual would not be easily able to source any repairs kits or gears to do repairs.

I have a feeling your indicator stalk has a squareish profile with a botton at the end of it, if that is the case, this is a G-Wagen part only and you will not be able to slavage one from another Mercedes Model as a donor. It is also difficult to suggest a repair to it without seeing what the issue is. Obviously there is a conatact issue withiin the stalk and without seeing the problem first-hand any suggestion is point less.

Sorry can not help here either unless you fit a 3 way Rocker Switch to incidate for left or right with the switch - crude, I know but feesible.

For those looking for a replacement with horn button:

https://dmt-automotive.com/de/Lenkstockschalter-VglNr-MERCEDES-BENZ-0055...

Price about €50 (less if buying outside the EU) DMT ships world-wide and accepts paypal. Replacement works fine, although the auto-cancellation does not work (it may be I have not installed it right)

Looks like this when installed
