Hello, JDRing. The diesel circuit was broken recently on my OM606. Upon start up, after clinical re-connection, there was such a dramatic metal-on-metal banging and clanging that I asked my favourite garage (Loch Shiel, Ardnamurchan) to recover the vehicle and cosset it. Back at theirs, upon start up, three voices as one exclaimed "diesel knock"". Google and YouTube could explain better than I but, essentially, the wrong amount of diesel is reaching the cylinder at the wrong time. Think: "pre-ignition". 6 injectors were cleaned, the diesel circuit was purged and all is now well. It was a horrifyimg npise, though! Good luck, Nick.

Re: Diesel knock

Thanks, but my 230GE is petrol.  The knocking I got was (I think) the result of 2 cylinders dead and piston slap.  But that was irrelevant because on taking the head off they said it was too warped to put back or skim it.

Hence new engine is due very soon and that apparently runs well (to be seen myself).

I have had a few diesels and in general they are basically tractors.  Although MB diesels go like a train.

Ha! Ha! My 606 goes like a roadtrain now. ;-) Your old petrol engine does sound to be beyond tired. All the best with the "new" one. N.

230 GE Knocking noise - could be a hydrolic tappet failed.

You can check this without removing the head just the cam cover.
