My 1987 460 swb manual diesel is looking somewhat tired in the bodywork (rather faded solid red) though mechanically great (as you would expect), and I am thinking hard about a respray. What do I need to get to a paint job of the quality of the original please?

Apart from the obvious... A good quality bodyshop!!
They are quite easy to respray as they are so square and due to the fact they are all hand made everything either bolts or screw on. It would save quite a lot of money if you can do that bit yourself removing all bits from the body. go round to see if there is any through rust so you wont get caught out.
If you want any more details perhaps re-define your question with specifics...

Bodywork / respray

have you try a rubbing compound (t cut) some times it will make your paint work look new and much cheaper

Agree but

If it has faded considerably I would use "Farecla" G10 fine cutting compound and use only an electric buffing mop Hand buffing wont do it. All Farecla products are professional quality and obtainable from body and paint suppliers
