Just purchased another 280 with an auto. Drives like a dream but has this unusual problem.

If I start engine and leave running for a few mintues in park it will all of a sudden go into drive/ or reverse not sure which but does not move as I have handbrake on and its in park. When I let handbrake off and move it in neutral it comes free. Also the other day I started it up put it into reverse moved 10ft and it stopped dead, it had actually gone into drive while I was reversing.

How can that happen. it changes thorough the gears normally and changes down fine, very smooth but what would be causing this intermittent problem, excuse the spelling.

auto trans woes...

In my experience, auto's start doing funny things when either:
-The fluid is too high or too low(check with engine idling),
-Dirt gets into it
-The filter gets clogged up(£15.01+vat from MB)
-The oil is so old that it has started degenerating

ie, change the oil and filter if it wasn't done recently, fill to correct level, at the same time checking integrity of outside levers/linkages/hoses

If this doesn't help, the problem is obviously more involving, ie sticking valves/broken valve springs, etc, etc Very very rare with MB Auto's though

Probably just something small&silly as above
