Hi Joe
A right hand drive late model Pinz is quite difficult to find.
This one looks to be in good condition although the advert does not make it clear if the engine just needs to be fitted or if it is damaged. There are quite a few bits of trim etc missing which can be expensive but most parts are still available through http://www.haflingertechnik.com/html/index.php
I prefer the soft tops and I think my next Pinz will be the 718 6x6 in RHD if I can find one. I do miss an automatic shift when off-roading which is one of the benefits of the later diesel models.
Coincidentally I was out in my Pinz this morning and managed to slide off the road and then get stuck on a rock !! The more I tried to get it out the more it started to tilt over as the verge began to give way. I decided it might be better to get a tow rather than tip it over and roll down the embankment ( with me in it).
When the farmer came in his tractor he had a good laugh that I had managed to get such a capable vehicle stuck only 2 feet off the road. That was a bit embarrassing .
Just getting up off the floor.......(from laughing)
What's all that white stuff I can see in the pictures? None of that down here.

Thats a weird 1.9 diesel it has 5 cylinders or i can't count ! 1235.....

Its all about tyres and having the right ones for snow / ice.
Tyres? - Wrong sort of Snow!

Hum .. did a similar thing in the G one Christmas eve . .they had just cleaned out the forestry ditch (15ft slope..). Ended up backing into ditch at 90 degrees to road to stop a roll.. and then had to take a few runs at it but came out..

You are partly right because the tyres could not get any grip on the icy track which is what caused me to slide off the road in the first place. The reason I could not get moving again was not because of the tyres though it was the large rock that was stuck under the rear diff.
I had the front and rear diffs locked and was trying to slowly move either forwards or backwards but the embankment was giving way under the wheels and the Pinz was starting to tilt over. I reckoned if I carried on it was about 50/50 chance of getting unstuck or rolling over so because I like my Pinz I phoned for a tow .
There is quite a bit more snow forecast over the next few days so I am sure I will be able to get it stuck again, maybe somewhere a bit more interesting next time.
Great post and good story Big Block! I got mine stuck in a muddy track because my 4WD solenoid didn't work: only had two wheel drive and couldn't get it out by driving it......after 4 hours of shovelling, I got it loose. Felt very humbled and fixed the solenoid pronto.
Just in case anyone is wondering, that is the 2.5l engine (i.e. the latest 156bhp 5 cylinder unit). I don't know why the advert says 1.9l diesel - maybe they got confused with the supacats which use this engine.

nah..a decent driver
Everyone else was to polite to say that .
a spade is a spade with me sunshine.
Incidentally, we never built any Pinzgauers for the MoD (or for anybody else, for that matter) with a 1.9 engine. It's a 2.5 VW 5-cylinder unit. And if any of the electronics are missing, somebody will have a nightmare of job restoring it........

I was wondering, since you built them, what your thoughts were regarding the original Steyr built 4 cylinder 2.5l air cooled petrol engine versus the later VW 5 cylinder diesel unit.
I know the VW turbo diesel makes more power than the petrol unit but my understanding is that the Steyr engine was specifically designed for the requirements of the Pinzgauer (twin oil pumps etc) and is of a much better quality and better suited to the Pinz than the mass produced VW engine.

to answer your question big block:
the original petrol pinz 4 cylinder is a superb engine for offroading in the pinz. As you said it, the gearbox and transfer box were all designed for offroading in mind. The engine's power range is exceptionally well-calibrated with the gearing for offroad work.
I don't know much about the 5-cylinder unit as mine has the old LT-6-clyinder engine, which hasn't stalled on me yet for being too steep an angle for too long. As far as I'm aware, they did fit a larger sump and bigger oil pump than the standard LT engine and slightly detuned it for power and upped it for lower and longer torque band. Mine doesn't have an intercooler so lag isn't so big a problem, but (and there is always a but), you need to keep the revs up constantly or it will stall in difficult situations. From what I understand the petrol is better for highly technical off-road manoeuvres.
The die hard boys who do the Transylvania trophy stuff swear by the old petrol engine, but if you talk to them that is also because it is easier for them to fix and buy bits for. On road, the petrol is hard going: and also very thirstly. For all round work, even they will tell you that they'd prefer the TDs.........but only after a few beers does this come out.
