Re: Any history or advice?

Seems to me to be a lot  of money for a '92 oil-burner with no paper.

Warranties, unless MB Tier Warranty, are generally fairly useless. I guess it depends on cost and coverage.

I'd keep looking for a 500 if I were you. I have a petrol 300 (463 SWB) which is slow.

It looks like the exhaust is exiting in front of the rhs rear wheel which is not the standard location and the resulting system is no doubt louder than standard. It's also missing the driver's side door pocket. It's undergone substantial cosmetic alterations.

No history is concerning. I owned a similar vehicle for a number of years and it was very reliable but slow, but mine was regularly serviced.

Hi Ian,

Interested in your comment - I have a petrol 300 (463 SWB) which is slow.

I too have a petrol 300 (463 SWB) but I don't think I would describe it as slow. OK, it's nowhere near as quick as my 2006 S500 but I think it moves along pretty well. Maybe sometimes I wish I had waited around for a G500 to beome available but more than happy with  what I have.

Mark

Re: Any history or advice?

i am going to give this one a miss!no

I have read enough to realise that at this price point I am going to have to be patient and lucky!

The dealer never got back to me and the warranty was just the usual 3 months useless bit of tat!!

They just wanted me to go and view the vehicle, I suppose they thought I would see the nice shiny wagen and fall for the looks and not worry too much about the mechanics/electrical etc.  G Wagen fever isnt going to get me lol

I am so grateful you are all out there offering advice and comments keeps me fever freeeeeangel

Re: Any history or advice?

You might be able to do a deal on this 1994 one:

http://www.wimbledonspecialistcars.co.uk/used/mercedes-benz/g-series/300...

It apparently has full service history and 83 k miles.

Then, there's also this one, form 2004, with 93 k miles.

Re: Any history or advice?

Look at the second one on the above post.

2004, twin-turbo, V8, G400. More torque than a G500 and all the toys that come with a newer G.

Whoa what a beautiful wagensmiley

Unfortunately I am not in an position to fly over to Germany eithercrying

I know I am going to regret this but I will ask any way. Why are G Wagens sooo expensive in GB and of such dubious quality (excludes GWOA wagens of course!)

personally,, they are only cheap if something's wrong with them.

99' g500's aren't that cheap for sure, when you do a search on the sites you'll notice they should be above 23k normally. Give the seller a call, looks too cheap maybe a scam

Re: Any history or advice?

No import duty within the EU.

You might need to pay VAT https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/vat-and-tax-vehicles-from-within-the-eu

But you can get on a plane and drive it home. you have 14days to notify DVLA. not to difficult.

Re: Any history or advice?

No duty and no VAT on a used car with more than 6,000 miles from EU. Registering in the UK is simple and new registration document can be had within about 2 weeks.

Gs are more expensive in UK because

  1. Fewer around compared to Germany and other countries
  2. Only produced in RHD and officially I imported into UK in certain years
  3. Exchange rate now favours euro purchases
  4. Older models in Germany depreciate more as they have many newer models to choose from, all LHD.
  5. Only older models and nearly-new models are RHD in UK.
  6.

Now that is a nice G500! Not seen that type of wood in a G before, and being pre 2002, will have the non fussy H/L button. Great mix of a 5ltr V8 in a G, OK LHD, but on the surface looks very good. Is that a webbasto pre heater controller I can see on the centre consul? Nice....

Having done over 200K miles in mine, just keeps on going, the V8 and a smile one ones face - EVERYDAY! Why so expensive in the UK? Main reason is low numbers (esp in RHD) as well as the fact it has now reached 'Icon' status, which means 'Joe Public' recognises it for what it is and demand still out strips supply. It also does not help the fact that some 'steelers' are hyping up the price to those who know no better.

Nice colour, nice interior, nice engine - if it has FMBSH gotta be worth considering?

Re: Any history or advice?
K714xel was subject of an ownership dispute a year or so ago. So called 'engineer' who has "disappeared to US" is very well known on this forum had sold this truck to an individual and taken the money for the truck plus some modifications. He then failed to deliver the truck and became uncontactable. Unless this has been resolved subsequently, which it may have been, once this truck reappears in public you can expect problems with the individual who holds a purchase contract for it. Chris
