Re: another new owner

Some pics of 1999 G500 LWB Caversham garage supplied, i am told it may be a 2000 model year car as it has a multifunction

steering wheel, i hardly care, but if  that is a fact, were there any other updates, both either visual or mechanical between 1999

       and 2001?

 The.copes,

Can you do me a favor and take a photo, when you have time, of the bit by the gear stick, it maybe the light, but I see some extra buttons? Multi function was an option pre 2000/1, but standard after. Do you have the blue lit sills?

Nice motor!

Re: another new owner

Nice G. The m/f wheel came out in mid '99. Do you have to put you foot on the brake to move out of park? That seemed to coincide with the new dash and MF wheel. Caversham was the importer in '99 before MBUK took over. V5 classifies them as imports.

Joe I think those buttons are for alarm cut out for when the vehicle is being recovered on a flat bed lorry a  totally unnecessary addition :) and heated windscreen

Re: another new owner

Hello all, just going through the file and have looked at the V5, it does  not state that it is a import but the attached invoice from a non franchised dealer suggest that it is,anyway all cars built abroad that end up in a country that did not manufacture them must be imported.

I have looked at the sills and they look as if they should be illuminated but  they do not light up,further investigation required.

Buttons by dash pic will be posted soon, but are for heated front screen and alarm/ anti tow.

Yes, foot down on brake required to release gear lever.

Hope this is of interest.

Hi Gandore, thanks for the welcome, yes I have got the UK G Wagon handbooks, I have attached a pic of the 4 instruction manuals, do you need any specific one? Part numbers are on the back of them.

I have a pal  at my local main dealer parts dept,I could ask but possibly they are out of print,or of it helps I could scan some of the required pages and e mail them to you.

Re: another new owner

Hello Spider,  many thanks for the welcome, re the centre console  bit around the gear lever I have attached a pic below, I was looking at the sills again, the front ones do look as if they should be illuminated as they are different from the rear, but even when I turn the side lights on they don't,before I try to take them off is there a simple way of telling as I do not want to break any clips.thank you.

Pic 2 is of the front door sill, pic,3 is the rear.

Re: another new owner

The front cill lights illuminate, but not the rears (standard). Pic attached of mine. They are switched on when the front door is opened. They are prone to failure, not the light but the invertor which powers it. The invertor is located behind the low side kick panel and can be removed by pulling the wires out of the door bellows. It depends upon your skills with electrics as to whether you want to try to fix it yourself, pay someone or leave it as is. I picked up a generic invertor for £3 a few years ago and soldered it in place of the factory one, still works today. They run at about 120v ac. You don't need to remove the light from the vehicle to repair the invertor.

Re: another new owner

What a quick reply, thank you, Roly,  is there  just one inverter or one for  each side?

And when you mean the low side kick plate is this in the footwell and if so drivers side or if there is 2 then both sides?

Presumably  the inverter is a  small and obvious item if it passes through the bellows, but will I need 2 and do you know if Merc sells them or do they want to sell you a complete lamp assembly or something daft!,

this just  shows what a owners club is all about, help and advice, thanks once again.

Re: another new owner

There's an invertor on each side behind the panel.  But there are two skins of steel behind the panel so it's not easily accessible from there, but it allows the cables to be moved more easily. Description below is for 1 side.

The cables running through the bellows can be slowly pulled out (towards the door) and it will come out with them. The inv is about 1" cube wrapped in foam.  The cable wrapping tape used for the looms goes sticky with age so the whole episode is pretty messy. MB sells them for £40 ea odd, so if you want to play safe you can buy it and plug directly in to the existing circuit. But if you are confident with electrics then buy a generic one and have a go.

If you bellows are split you can replace that whilst you are in there.

Re: another new owner

Thanks Blue Fin. Wow, I am envious of those manuals. I'd love to have a hard copy but would be happy with PDF versions of them too, and the interior owner's manual would be particularly nice to get me started. Mine is a 1999 and the ones I've found online so far seem to be for much later models or, at best, all inclusive of model years.

Blue Fin,

Just another thought about the manuals since I responded too quickly without thinking it through. Maybe posting them on hte private members side of this site might help others who have our year/model trucks.

Hi Roly.

i have been into Mercs and got a diagram of the sill parts, this is in the attached PDF which is the part number you are referring to for the inverters?

My dealer tells me its part 45.

Which is part MA463 540 n18 13    Total cost of parts is £479.42!

Re: another new owner

PN 45 looks like the lights them selves, the inv don't appear.

But to be sure we need Gav to comment. He'll confirm and give the best price from a dealer.

Re: another new owner

A463 540 18 13 are the Sill Plates and Lights at £199.76 each + vat

I think the Inverter comes with the below cable loom listed as...

Cable Harness in front pillar, Connector, Inverter, Entrance Lamp

EPC lists A463 540 17 13 at £53.27 each + vat but MB Germany are showing as Special Order maybe 6-8 weeks

Re: another new owner

Thanks Gav, I prized a sill out and there is not a light fitted, now this seems odd as my MB dealer says my car did have them fitted according to the spec check, which its self is odd as prior to getting the car I asked them for the factory spec and they could only give me a data card with the codes but not the descriptions,as I have the original invoice I checked and no charge has been made for illuminated sills, so where they standard on a 500? My dealer says not and at the time they were a £1,700 option, that doesn't sound right, anyway, my front sills have clear wording which seems as they are for illuminated ones as the rears  are different and clearly are not, so did they all get a clear lettering on the front sills regardless if you paid for illuminated ones?

The garage that has looked after this car from new says it never had them, so could they have been removed prior to delivery for some reason, for example the purchaser either did not want them or if it was a option asked them to be removed?

Anyway my dilemma,do I order the 2 new lights and then find out there is nothing to connect them to wiring wise, or just leave it as it is?

It's just niggling me as I like things to be as in how it left the factory condition, are you Gav able to tell from the chassis number for certain whether it had them or not? My chassis number is listed in a earlier post, or if some one knows the option code for them back in 1999 I can check my data card.

Thanks again to all you helpers!

All early 500s had them as standard. Can you post a pic of what you have removed.

Re: another new owner

Yes, I have attached three pics, thank you for the brochure copy, as you say, they are standar according to the brochure,,there were some lengths of wire which I have shown just sitting in the groove.it seems wet in there as well but the drivers carpets are dry, the channel that the sills sit in is wet as you can see, some of the sill seems to be rusting away to, the the runner  it sits in is broken and brittle.
