Re: Alternator repair?

The alternator fault is most likely due to the brushes. The brush unit includes the voltage regulator. A generic one is £7 and a genuine Bosch one is £45.

Best to remove existing one to determine that the replacement part number is correct.

It may be that the existing brushes are a little stuck from corrosion and not actually worn, Spraying some WD40 into the alternator’s intake rubber snorkel may free them. Give the alternator a little tap with a mallet and spray in some WD40 when engine running and then tap and repeat.

Attached, is the Bosch service manual for the alternator.

The Brushes and regulator unit is accessed by removing the rear cover (with the water fording snorkel).

The brush-and-regulator unit is held in place by two screws.

(Normal alternators do not have the rear cover with snorkel and the unit can be replaced in situ.)

If you have a 14 Volt, 80 amp (high capacity) alternator for a diesel engine:

This seems to be the required part:

Precaution post alternator repair; make sure the battery is fully charged up.

Fitting a good alternator to a weak battery puts unnecessary strain on the alternator which in extreme cases could blow the alternator.

Re: Alternator repair?

Thanks Arnie for these, have removed rear snorkel but unfortunately can't read the numbers in situ, so will have to remove the alternator to get the info, in meantime using it daytime only!
