Re: Alternator repair?

Hi Jason

I told you the best option but if you are stuck a 606 alternator fits straight on and i have 2 om603 alternators spare

I will part exchange yours

Just get a regulator brush pack and job done. Bearings are easy to do also and are cheap

I would just fix your original one as at least you know its right when done for many more years

Re: Alternator repair?

Hi,

I have a new brush pack on order, bearing has slight rock but will it be the pulley itself or alternator bearings? How hard to remove pulley?

Thanks

Jason

Re: Alternator repair?

Most likely the bearings. For my money you would be better off having it reconditioned by local re-conditioners they would replace the necessary worn items. There is the condition of the armature to consider; if this is worn, then your current efforts will only be a short term measure. Choice is yours. Re-conditioning is not a bleed, well certainly not from Leicestershire.

The pulley can be carefully tapped off or using some small pullers. Do make sure you do not loose the key slotted in between the center shaft and pulley - I have a mental block now and just cannot think of the properly technical term - I think it may be a drift-key or something like that.

Re: Alternator repair?

Hi

Woodruff key or keyway steel might be your options

The windings will be fine i am sure. I dont trust many recon units and always find it is better to repair your own unit as you know the history and mileage on it. If its had a nice time rebuild your own unit

Bearings are easy and should have no play. The beauty of repairing your own is you can fit quality bearings like oem or better

Most recon units only offer 12 months 12,000 mile warranty so just fix your own and it will do another 100k

Windings in a starter motor sometimes fail but in an alternator they are usually good for many 1000s of miles and more. I understand what you are saying but to fit a genuine reg pack and brush pack and better than oem bearings for a bit if time is to me a no brainer

Jason just get the bits and i will do it. not like the fiat propshaft that was a proper mess lol

Re: Alternator repair?

Hi

Are you sure its only a 55 amp output. Is it not at least 85??. I know a diesel engine draws only power fo the fuel solenoid but with electric windows etc

Social needed with no fiat parts. Off road plan i need to see

Re: Alternator repair?

The High Capacity one was 80 amps. Although an option, I think most if not all UK Diesels would have had that.

Re: Alternator repair?

The sticker on Alternator says 55amp! Hence it struggles with spot lights and main beam etc. New regulator on and it works tho need to remove those Chinese Bosch bearings and upgrade at some point, needs your skills Gaz!

Re: Alternator repair?

The alternators are fairly generic in design. They mostly differ in the mounting bracket arrangements and possibly pulley size. The G version has an additional casing with snorkel at the rear of the alternator, but this part can be removed and fitted to a replacment alternator of higher capacity.
