1989 MERCEDES-BENZ G-WAGEN 300GD M2

I recently purchased, but need to replace the engine, it is a smokey old diesel, 175k on the clock,

Ideally, petrol swap out, not sure what cost would be involved, or a new diesel?

can anybody help, offer advice, recommend where to get the engine and which one would work?

I did a straight 230GE engine swap a couple of years back.  Mark Ashton over in Somerset way found the engine for me.

Not sure about swapping the fuel. But a 300GD is slow/agricultural/reliable....most would consider putting an OM606 diesel in in...  but what about gearbox and all that.  Maybe go for the whole lot, but its a 10k conversion versus about 1k for an engine swap.

thanks, good to know. would OM606 need new gearbox etc, or is that a straight swap? DId Mark Ashton fit as well?

I would spend £10k if I could find a company. I love it that much... If there are any recomendations.

I think you should look up Gordon Osgerby up in Blackpool. OM606 conversions is what he does, and he had a stock of engines he was shifting due to moving premises https://www.facebook.com/om606/

thEasiest swap is a 617a (turbo diesel) but there is the odd one in uk, the majority are in USA

Other quick and cheap ones are engines from daewoo musso or ssangyong Rexton 2.9td (om662) but you will have to change gearbox as starter is on passenger side

They are based on the om602 which is found in 190d w124 w901/3 sprinter

Next up is om605 found in 96-99 w202 c250td

All the above are 5cylinder and give you plenty of engine bay space

Next up is the om606 which is more of a squeeze

They will all require a gearbox swap too

If you have a 3 door car I’d go for a 5 cylinder option

Gordon is having a cull and has a few engines available as his moving premises

For a swb a 300e m103 engine works well, plenty around and with the auto box good for 17/18mpg, if you can find a manual it improves to 19/20

There's a complete engine and gearbox on the G Register (no worries to mention here). http://www.gwagenregister.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7346&sid=d75d8d4... Not sure why he backed out doing his conversion, but it's the full ticket by the looks of it.
