Time for a rebuild of my front axle, swivel bearings shot , mot due next month! Also a low speed vibration/ noise present. Didn't feel confident doing this on my own as wanted a proper job with clearances observed rather than hoping the shims etc are ok.

So removed axle, not as much  work as you think and took it to G Wagen G s  very comprehensive workshop,(Gaz) ,see photos

On strip down , both cv boots shot, so one running very dry, luckily oil seal leaked a bit stoping it getting trashed, joints seem ok though. Hoping to clean up and repack with grease with new cv boots. Hopefully this was the cause of the vibration aggro.

Also all wheel bearings and swivel bearings whilst it apart, seems only sensible to do them along with all the seals etc. Nearing re assembly now once Gaz can stop his ocd about vibrations and balancing!

Diff seems excellent and passed Gaz's Dial gauge tests with flying results so luckily that can be left alone to the next 25 years.

Thanks to Gaz for engineering skills and patience and putting up with my efforts at trying to remove bits also many thanks to Gav for unsurpassed knowledge of spares and Scott for advice on Axle removal.

Re: 463 front axle rebuild

Axel now back on, a really heavy lump to remove on your own , not recommended! Axel now has all new wheel bearings, swivel bearings , all hub seals renewed, cv joints checked and reversed left to right to share the wear also wearing new rubber boots on the cv. Steering feels so much better, not so vague.Very very smooth. Many thanks to Gaz for all the rebuild and patience in setting the shims just also sourcing quality bearings( a lot cheaper than MB) also to Gav for all the genuine stuff Hopefully sorted for next millennium!

Re: 463 front axle rebuild

Its perfect and thanks

You will have no issues with axle and the only things that could fail are the cv joints but they are happy for now and also were still in good shape

I need to do mine now as its the only part i have not rebuilt on my g

Looking at your cv boots etc i think mine is due also

Considering ours have done nearly 200k and your axle had never been apart the boots last well. If it had not leaked oil onto the one boot it might of been ok even at the mileageits covered

Saying that the slight oil leak from axle helped the cv joint stay lubed win win i think in a lucky way

Not ideal but it saved it

Happy days
