255 x 15" rim - tyre sidewall size?
Hi,
I have recently started on g-wagons with a 1988 LWB 280GE.
It currently has 255 / 75 R15 (Goodyear) tyres on (I think) 7J x 15 H2 wheels.
Q. Is this the correct (standard) tyre size for this vehicle?
I am having some difficulty sourcing this size of tyre. Have been advised that a 255 / 70 / R15 tyre is more commonly available with better choice of manufacturers and have been offered this as an alternative.
Q. if 75 is standard... would dropping to 70 in the side wall cause any problems? (with transmission or transfer box)
any help appreciated
thanks

I have used 31x10.5R15 (which is a BFGoodrich size and I'm sure other brands) on those rims.
That converts to approx 270/75R15.

Remember the "75" in the metric size is a percentage of the tyre width, not an actual measurement.
Eddie.
I believe 255 / 75 / 15 r is the standard tyre size on the 15" wide alloy and is = to 30" x 9.5" x 15". you may find the " tyres easier to source.
You may want to consider 31" 32" or even 33" tyres but a 70 profile will give you a smaller diameter and that may not be a good idea.
No doubt expert advise will follow my post.
This file may help, just a little gearing & tyre size calculator i wrote
Go BFG. They last years.
Hi ,
I had the same problem trying to replace the Good Year Wranglers 255/75/15 . ( 15 years old, but with plenty of tread left) Apparently this size is discontinued. I had to settle for Bridgestone Duelers 31/10.5/15. Much quieter and road friendly. So far very pleased with them.
Gordon,
thanks for the spreadsheet
