1993 w463 turbo diesel
FINALLY got the old girl back on the road after deciding to add some breathing apparatus. 93 swb 3l diesel is now officially a turbo. I have to say it was more work than i thought it would be. What i assumed would be just a couple of weeks maybe a month turned into 3 months and quite a few pennies. Not all in relation to adding the turbo as i thought i might as well fix a couple of things while it was off the road but things soon add up. I can understand why the RHD G wagens didn't get the 350td engine. Accelerator mech had to be messed with, Steering box had to be moved along with a few other things, intake pipe over the top of the engine is very close to the master cylinder but I'm very pleased now its done. Not a massive improvement in power but definitely notice the difference and much more drivable/less frustrating than before. As many of you will know these diesels are ridiculously slow. Here is a link to a few pictures. Also a big thanks to Gordon up at G Restorations for the advice and for upgrading my fuel pump. Adding the turbo made absolutely no difference to the vehicle until the fuel was adjusted.
You weren't kidding when you said tight fit. Congrats Dale looks great - and nice body colour.
Did you put an intercooler on ?
Derek
No intercooler. I bought the bits from Del Montreal's g350td which don't have intercoolers. Also i didn't want to put too much stress on my engine with it not being a proper turbo engine and not having turbo pistons. I am thinking i may add an intercooler at some point possibly but not sure whether an intercooler would increase boost pressure or not which is already alarmingly high, getting up to 18psi. Currently messing with the wastegate trying to get it to open at lower boost pressure.
