Hi Farand

Better idea is to drop a 617a engine in as the standard 617 can have limited life once a turbo goes on.

Live just had this conversation and it works well. Have a look at my thread on here, which thinking about it you need to be a member to see :-).

Being based in Iceland though you are well placed as there are loads of people who use the 617a to modify. Right upto 400+ BHP!

Re: 1991 300GD - want to add turbo - need advice . . .

hello david, neither  the  om617 or 617a  will fit your g wagen it is a 463 300d so it uses an om603 engine .

the confusion between the right hand starter motor engines (old type m110 petrol/om617 diesel etc)

all the types the 463 g wagens use are left hand starter motor ie. om603/ om606 om605 m103 petrol etc.

you could just get a 606a engine and fit the sump /dipstick /injection pump /throttle linkage and some serious plumbing work c/w intercooler and this will give you lots of power.

here is a picture of a 463 300d that was changed over to om606 turbo 24valve diesel from gutless om603

Lesson in look before you leap (or reply) at least on a phone screen. Saw 300 and performance & assumed usual 460 issues :-) Simon

Any conversion work will be pricey and difficult for him. There isn't the depth if available parts in  Iceland like we have, and they get battered by import duty.  Montreal on here had an engine for sale in the classifieds which had all the parts to do a turbo upgrade on a 603.

they have gone now so it may be worth a pm, I think he used the pump for his 606 so that would have to be sourced seperately.

How much is a ferry to ship your G here for a conversion??? :)

Hi all - thanks for the info. I assumed there would be a "simple & easy" way to add turbo to the 603 but apparently not :-(
I will take this into consideration while i do some cosmetic jobs done.

buy a turbo exhaust manifold with turbo /you will have to drill out the oil return hole that is present on the 603 's engine block despite it not being a turbo block/ the oil feed can be taken from an unused connection on the oil filter .

you will need to have the injection pump replaced with a turbo type unit or get your original pump re calibrated  (if it does not have boost control it will puff black until you have boost) you will need to pipe in an intercooler and then connect the boosted air to your either modified inlet manifold or a  factory turbo inlet manifold /it will all bolt on to your engine

but you must not run the boost monster high !!!! keep it to 12 psi max and be careful or you will melt something /there are no oil squirters for the underside of the pistons on a non turbo engine of your type.

get yourself a 606 turbo engine it is built to the correct spec. sodium filled valves/oil cooled extra strong pistons/high output oil pump etc etc - you get the picture.

Yes still have a factory 603 turbo for sale. See the ads. Dont want much for it. It is a BIG step up from NA 603. MUCH easier to do than 606. BIG BIG job. do not underestimate. Is that Too LOUD?

Om 606 td best thing i ever did

My g is like a new car

Awesome

Ive fitted different turbo etc and its just good for me. I can vouch for a 463 603 d as that was what my vehicle was. Had engine in bits and got it 30% better than it was. Still have all bits but decided td was the way

Not as difficult as people say and plenty of donor vehicles. Keep it all as from factory is my opinion but many seem to keep all mechanical pump off om603

Its a prefrence i think. om 606 and you will never look back

Just my views

I went with an (upgraded) s350 mechanical pump because I didn't want a bodged up ecu that only a specialist geek in a shed could repair, cos mercedes ain't goin to touch it! 99% of garages ain't goin to touch it!  I wouldn't know how to fix it!  So no way!!  With a mechanical pump if there's diesel in it and you can spin the engine your going home!

Surprisingly fuel, petrol & diesel slightly cheaper than Uk. Now wine I guess might be 2-3 times uk price :-) Ta Simon

He he thats right. Its quite expensive here in Iceland but the iskr. is very favorable vs. the pound for example.
Thanks for all the advice.
