1990 463 603 Diesel died... Which new engine with more HP? HELP!
Hi, i hope you guys can help.
My W 463 1990 Diesel 113HP 4 speed Automatic has died. I want to put in a new engine that has more horsepower since im living on Mallorca, Spain where there are hills and mountains. The 603 that was in it just didnt have enough.
What is the best option getting more horsepower but that doesnt require changing transmission or other big changes.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks a lot in advance!

om 606 fits straight in but its not that simple to be honest
There are lots of little mods that need to be done and decide if electronic or manual pump conversion is needed
Manual you will pay a grand or so to have pump modified
Electronic is change all wiring off an e300 td
If you fit this motor you will feel like you have 3 times more power and better fuel economy too
Sounds like its too good to be true but it is true

G350td work really well, try and get one from 94-96 version as the early ones are troublesome.
Try german ebay and a few breakers in the Netherlands should be able to help you out.

I presume your G left hand drive? 606 must be easier if LHD? Also presume if properly set up less emissions than a 603?
If you're not too bothered about loads more power you could go for a normally aspirated 606, good for around 140bhp if you open the injection pump up.
I guess they recommended that version of the 603 turbo as certain ones suffered cracked cylinder heads.
The auto transmission is certainly good for 170 BHP, as that is what the M103 produces on the G300E of same vintage, with same transmission.
No it will fit onto the 606.
Difficulty will be around matching the auto box change up / down and kick down I guess.
The vacuum and the connection to the throttle linkage will be tricky.
As I say mine was easy as it has a manual box.
The torque characteristics of the 606 is different so it may not be quite "right" when mated to your auto box. Plenty of people have done this though.
If you're feeling adventurous / confident you could transplant the e class auto box but this would either require an after market electronic controller or some who can separate the e class ecu's.
In order, easy to hard IMHO:
Buy another g-wagon??
lol
If extra power is what you need, perhaps you might consider fitting a 300e (103- Output 128 KW without cat and 125 with cat) petrol engine. There are plenty reconditioned engines around. Your old 603 is only rated at 83 KW.
If they have the right competence, facilities and don't hit any issues 10hrs.
Thanks Leonidas but thats a gasoline engine right?
Yes it is. I don't think it will make much difference on the fuel consumption, but power wise it will. These are very reliable engines without too many gismos and electronics . Thus very easy to service . Due to the age you might be able to get away without a catalytic converter. Perhaps it may be cheaper to buy an old w124 car and transplant the works ???
As you already have a 603 you already have the G specific parts:
I don't know but it may have egr valve and other emission control stuff. You can chuck that away.
I'm assuming you are talking about a turbo 603.
I honestly don't know. Some low mileage engines are in poor health, high km's don't necessarily = poor condition.
If the engine is in a car can you buy the car? If so you can the run it in the car for a few days before you commit to the swap. Then sell the car for spares.
A 606 into a 463 1992.
the w124 e300d with the non turbo om606 engine is quite sought after so might not be the cheaper option, the w210 cars with the turbo 606 are generally regarded as junk [not the engine just the car] and can be bought very cheaply
Hi Gaz,
Thanks a lot, i heard about the 606 but i have no knowledge at all about a job like this.
Is there any easier solution, i dont need a lot more power.
Thanks for the help and quick response!
