1989 W460 300GD - videos of newly installed 606 engine
Hello fellow G fanatics
I am delighted to present videos of my succesful 606 engine transplant. Many thanks to Mike Axelberg for incredibly helpful guidance and to Martyn Ball for a first class installation

A real priveledge to have such good people in this community who are absolutely top of their game.

Sweet.... now go enjoy it!!!
Nice, very nice! and an interesting website that MB engine convertors... will be looking through there.
on the first video, @ 50 seconds, what's the thing bolted to the inner wing? with a round top? looks like a fuel filter head?
Wow, that thing shifts! What tyres and gearbox have you got?

A 606a engine really transforms a G and it's nothing to do with fuel consumption it just makes them a pleasure to drive. Is your G manual or auto?
Can we be cheeky and ask what the cost of your conversion was? for the benefit of other members who may want to go the same route. Did you just hand the G over and get it back done or did you do some of the work yourself?
Where is the ECU stashed, it's usually wedged in beside the battery.
Regards Gordon
great conversion !!
hope you enjoy it now. this engine breathes life into the 460.
you have kept the electronics which mean you have used the original autobox. and i see you have kept the 606a airfilter too. good choice !
well done to all involved. axel mastermind @ work again i see. he is a proper geezer. always helpful to anyone that wants help.
my advice. fit some new springs upfront. the 606a is a heavy engine. and definately fit koni raids.

FYI. Mike Axel took no part whatsoever in this conversion, and doesn't endorse in any way the converter that carried out the work.
Just to clear up a misapprehension that seems to be growing in this thread

good point gordon, as i know axel is up to his eyeballs with work.
but he's always helpful and hospitable when needed.

wrote in wrong thread!
So its the 606 electronic IP and pulled the entire 210 loom? How did you deal with the ignition?
Also, was there a reason why you didn't go manual IP (603A pump)?
Aside from generally being totally bulletproof and proven (no electronics=no grief and repairable anywhere), it would mean EGR delete was easy (its possible with the 606 IP, but gets you into exactly the kind of grief that is best avoided).
Binning the EGR is absolutely the very first thing that the OM606 needs (in fact anything fitted with an EGR system needs!). I don't mean to piss on anyone's bonfire here, but EGR faults are super common caused by carbon buildup on the sensor (not just a MB thing, but a depressing feature of all post mid 90s diesels (thank the EcoMentalists for that one..)) and it will result in 'Limp Home' mode being activated by the ECU.
I appreciate that who ever did the conversion may have the ability to then reset it; but its definitely not something that a MB dealership would go anywhere near.
Also, looking at the routing to the intake plenum - where has the intercooler been fitted? I'd imagine that the ECU is able to compensate for the incoming air temperature/ pressure being higher than it should be (flow will be slower too so the MAF will detect that) - the engine will be making less power than it should though.
Has anyone heard how this conversion has been after the initial excitement, how has it behaved, has there been any issues, does Simeon Anderson still own the G
Interested in how it's gone

Gaz's 606 engined 463 which is a similar conversion as in uses original ecu , going great, no egr tho deleted at birth, never seen it smoke!

You two should get a room!!!
LOL, a shed maybe!
A bigger shed is needed
I have too many vehicles
I need a fuel injector pump test rig for my next project
Its not a g wagon but a mercedes 190
Going to fit om 606 with mechanical pump while i do my wiring loom for electronic one
Just done a boat conversion mechanical and standard so its ok but i want big power for my 190 so i know i will end up going electronic
Its easy to fit alda etc but the only people i trust are myna superturbo etc. If one cylinder is not 100% for fuel its dead. Cant take the risk
Has anyone got a 606 manual flywheel to sell and a mint low miles engine that runs perfect
Would buy whole car possibly
Ive run out of engines and have 2 but cant be bothered rebuilding them
As for your comments Gordon
Jason has driven my car and appreciates how good it is
He is considering a conversion of his g to om 606
Furthermore i have done many mods to my g wagon to get to where it is now as i am fussy
G wagons are long winded to work on but simple and just like a big mechano set unlike other cars. Everything is built well and wont break if you do the job methodically
I hate rust and poor mechanicals and i would like to paint it at some point but i cant bear to strip all the thing down to paint it properly
It seems like a competition to some people
It is just a project i wanted to do and fell in love with the thing. I dont take credit for the ecu etc it was all down to martyn ball mbv8
He is a great guy and knows his merc ecu and wiring more than anyone. He deserves a lot more credit for his efforts. A very clever man on the merc wiring and other cars i bet , he only likes mercs though
I could just get the ecu done and do the rest now but i would not take his skills so he would get the job for any other projects i do
They work perfect and it was the way merc built that engine, he is a stickler for keeping things correct so i followed the advise and am happy 17000 miles on with no issues
I did change the engine to be fair as i found a perfect one so g wagon is a1 now
I met Jason at the agm and yes we need a room lol as i now do the jobs hes unsure of
Jason is very particular about jobs and knows exactly what he need doing or not
Hes a top guy for honest advice and is offering it for free and independently
I do the same
I dont want to say anything is better or worse it just needs to be done correctly and be right
To be honest when you looked at my g and said i still dont think these conversions are there yet??
Whats that about
I have done mine for me, not a business or customers and people were crowding under the bonnet with 1000s of questions
I just gave honest independent answers
People are impressed with my g and thats all there is to it
Ive done every conversion going to bikes and cars for 30 years so i know what im on about
Itmight seem as im not taking it all in but i am and think on issues afterwards and get a solution
You do your stuff and i will do mine but drop the sarcastic comments. We could be beneficial to each other
I could and have the knowledge to do g wagon g restorations, my work is my advert and i need nothing else
Big shed all the kit and no overheads
Rest assured i am happy doing my engineering and projects and jobs to fill in
It seems you try to knock my work ??Look at most of the poor jobs and bad design people do and sell it, I do it all with my own hands and kit. Jason made his own mind up on this and now i get his jobs. Enough said
Its all done by me. The ali welding the mig welding the fabrication work etc etc. I dont sub anything out. I have cnc lathes and millers at work and can do pretty much anything. We dont do crank grinding or the likes of nor lazer cutting but my friend does so im sorted
I trust that to a friend in the usa who does all my cranks and balancing work
Final point is
I dont want to pay anyone to do my work as i do it myself so thats just how it is. I would also give an honest answer to any other g wagon enthusiasts and would help if i could. It all oils wheels and you never know when you might need some help
G
Good for you! It's nice to see someone pleased with their work, will the 190 project be getting an intercooler?
Kind Regards
Gordon
sorry i ma lacking in technical knowledge so cant answer your questions although ECU is behind the glove box
cost was £1,000 for the 110,000 mile E300TD donor car
labour in all was £3,800 but this included a lot of work to my brakes which were shot
new merc parts sump, engine mounts ancillaries allow extra £1000
So all in say £6k, allow £7k to be safe
Can i just point out please that this MB conversion is not endorsed by Mike Axel and he has a different methodology that you should speak with him about if interested in going this route
I should say my overall impression is that this process is not for the faint hearted lots of pitfalls that years of trial and error have refined, Mike Axel-Berg or Martyn Ball are your best point of contact, if not too busy!
